[EVENT] IBDP: Learn Deeply, Apply Strategically Across Multiple Countries

As global university admissions – from the US and UK to Canada and Singapore – raise the bar for academic excellence, IBDP students need more than strong grades. They need a strategic roadmap and timely guidance to unlock the full value of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

This August, Mentors14 is partnering with Westminster Academy to host a specialized event:  “IBDP: Learn Deeply – Apply Broadly Across Countries”. This event is designed for students in Grades 9–11 and their parents, especially those currently enrolled in or preparing to enter the IBDP.

What is the IBDP?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a globally respected pre-university curriculum for students aged 16–19. Recognized by top universities worldwide, the IBDP is known for its academic rigor and emphasis on critical thinking, research, and intercultural understanding.

IBDP Structure

The IBDP curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core:

– Six subject groups include Studies in language and literature, Language acquisition, Individuals and societies, Sciences, Mathematics and Arts.

In the programme, students take a mix of Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) subjects. While both levels are assessed using the same grade descriptors, HL subjects require a deeper understanding and broader knowledge.

Each subject has its own Internal Assessment (IA) – a project or an assignment that allows students to explore a topic of their choice. The IA typically contributes 20-30% to the final grade in most subjects, with the remaining percentage coming from external examinations.

– DP Core include: TOK, EE, CAS.
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Encourages students to reflect critically on how knowledge is constructed and understood across disciplines.
  • Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research project that builds skills in inquiry, analysis, and academic writing – essential for university readiness.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Involves meaningful experiences beyond academics, helping students develop empathy, leadership, and a well-rounded lifestyle.

Together, these elements deepen learning and help students grow into reflective, capable individuals ready to thrive in university and beyond.

Because the IBDP offers a wide range of subject choices, numerous internal deadlines, and significant freedom in selecting research topics, it can be challenging for students and parents to navigate the program effectively. IBDP Event: Learn Deeply, Apply Strategically Across Multiple Countries is designed to provide clear guidance and strategic insights for families considering or currently undertaking the IBDP.

By understanding how to make informed subject selections, align academic work with long-term goals, and maximize the impact of core components like the EE, IA, and TOK, participants will be better equipped to build a distinctive and competitive university application in a growing pool of IBDP candidates.

Key Topics:

  • A comprehensive overview of the IBDP structure and the strategic roles of Internal Assessments (IA), Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
  • Building a strong university application while effectively managing IBDP demands
  • Application strategies tailored to different higher education systems: UK, US, Canada, Singapore, and others
  • Real case study from a successful IBDP student admitted to top global universities

What You Will Gain:

  • Clear guidance on choosing subject combinations aligned with intended majors and career aspirations
  • Methods to maximize academic depth through IA, EE, and TOK
  • A practical framework for developing a study and application timeline that aligns with both IBDP milestones and international admission deadlines
